Over 1000 tones of chemical and plastic waste washed ashore from the burnet down Xpress-PearlWessel, Central Environment Authority (CEA) director-general Hemantha Jayasinghe said.
The massive waste load were deposited in 41 containers in Wathala area, he further said.
Meanwhile, scientists suspect there were undisclosed chemicals or prohibited hazardous materials may carry on the ship. Identifying the burnt marks and melted bones of the dead turtles washed ashore last week, the industry experts believed such materials might stored in the ship.
