The government has lost over 346 million from the lands given to businessmen and other people on long term lease concession for the development activities in the Kuchchuveli Divisional Secretariat in the Trincomalee district, says the minister of Land at a media briefing on the 9 February.
A recent report by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, citing the government statistics, said that nearly 90% of the lands seized by the Army in the north and east had been returned. However, it is reported that more than 8000 acres of land occupied by the forces have not been given back to the rightful owners.
Besides, nearly 12 years after the war, more than 400 families are still living in the refugee camps in Jaffna and most of them are identifies as families who lost their lands. Further, the government is capturing lands in the North and East, designating them as archaeological sites.
