The Boat riders of Mirissa and the safari Jeep drivers in Yala have been sent for quarantine after the provided services for Ukrainian tourists.
This occurred after the first 180 group of Ukrainians travelling in Sri Lanka under a so called ‘pilot project of tourism revival’ being carried out with a massive publicity by the government.
Those service providers were taken into army custody soon after the tourists have gone to the hotels. After They objecting to send them to quarantine centers located in far away a hotel situated near Thissamaharama was arranged for them to quarantine. This tourist project is said to be as a pilot project organizing by Udayanga Weeratunga through his tour agency. One member of southern provincial council is given the contract for providing them accomodation. The safari drivers were informed to guide tourists by another very close member of provincial council of minister Namal
Rajapaksha. Although Rs 5000 was given for a trip the whole income of their families for next 14 days are being deprived due to quarantine.
Travelling during the first 14days of quarantine period is prohibited for tourists according to quarantine regulations whereas apparently that rule was not applicable to 180 Ukrainian tourists. Specially this group is consisted of children as well and they have less attention on health guidelines. Anyway the conduct of the government to send these drivers for quarantine is a clear cut violation of their fundamental rights .
