(TopNews) The defeat of the 2021 budget in several Local Government bodies where People Alliance came into power in 2018 in the Local Government elections has drawn the attention of the political arena.
Haldummulla Local Authority’s 2021 budget was a massive defeat, and only 3 out of 20 members were voted in favour. Accordingly, it was revealed that four representatives of the People’s Alliance had also voted against it. The 2021 budget at the Alawwa Local Authority was defeated by 4-7 votes on the 10th December. The deputy chairman representing the People Alliance said that he had voted against the budget as it did not allocate sufficient funds to spend for the people.
Meanwhile, during the first reading of the 2021 budget of the Bope-Poddala Local Authority, six representatives of the People Alliance voted against it. The 2021 budget of the Balangoda Local authority was defeated in the first and second reading of the budget. However, there was a commotion as the chairman concluded the meeting announcing that the budget had been passed.
Six representatives of People’s Alliance have voted against the 2021 budget at the Harispattuwa Local Authority, which defeated by 14-20.
The budget of the Udapalatha Local Authority was defeated on the 8th of December. Also, People’s alliance has lost the budget in the Padiyathalawa and Jaela Local Authorities.
The local political leaders who joined the People’s Alliance from the SLSP, which won the provincial election in 2018, are in an embarrassing situation to confront with not only the people of the area, but also their supporters due to the actions of the leaders of the People’s alliance. In the face of the Corona pandemic, there is no formal program to provide relief to the people to ease the economic hardship, and they left with no means of doing what the are supposed to do.
There is a political opinion that the actions of the local authorities’ representatives in this manner are indicated an upheaval of the People’s alliance. However, People’s alliance sources say that Basil Rajapaksha has devised a plan to prevent this disgrace and prepare candidates for the forthcoming provincial council election.
