Mahinda to Consider Alternate Candidates over Uncertainty of Gota’s Citizenship

Gotabhaya, the candidate of the Sri Lanka Peoples Alliance (UPFA), has been finally nominated by President Mahinda Rajapakse for the Presidential Election.

However It is learned that Mahinda Rajapaksa is planning to cover up the possibility of not getting enough votes under the uncertainty arising out of the citizenship issue which he is facing in court.

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa convened an emergency party leadership meeting Monday afternoon(30th), focusing on preparing an alternate candidate to face the risk of Gotabhaya Rajapakse’s failure to contest on his citizenship issue. Mahinda Rajapaksa has decided to take this defense step as the case filed by Gotabhaya Rajapaksa in the Court of Appeal is to be heard in a special court from October 2.

Even if a legal operation is carried out with the intention of nullifying the allegations, Gotabhaya Rajapakse will be prevented from contesting as a presidential candidate if an interim injunction is obtained on the 3rd, even there is no problem with the documentation. Assessing the situation, it is former Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa who has been proposed to be the alternative candidate, according to unofficial sources.

However, his name as well as the name of Mahinda Rajapaksa’s wife Shiranthi Rajapaksa have been among the names that were used for the presidential candidacy.
