Railway Service is to be declared as an essential service soon, State Minister of Transport and Aviation Ashok Abesinghe stated.
Railway worker unions are calling trade union actions making the railway transport stand still and the government has no solution for their salary increment demands. After April 21 Islamic Extremist Attacks, the service was declared essential since emergency regulations enacted by government gazette notice. However once the emergency was called off the regulations of essential services automatically cease to function. Having faced public criticism for unabling to provide public services without obstructions government has opted to use regulations meant for an emergency situation to hide behind repressive laws, without showing inability to give solutions to railway workers.
