The Colombo Magistrate released eight journalists who were accused as treason by the MR regime 7 years ago.
These journalist have been working at the web sites of Sri Lanka Mirror and Sri Lanka X news. Kelum Shiwantha, Subhash Jayawardhana, Ajith Seneviratna, Himashi Karunaratna,Tharindhu Rajapaksha, Asanka Niwantha, Siddeeik Kariyappar and Sriyanthi Manawadu were the journalists who were released on 20th.The Colombo Magistrate released them because of the Attorney-general Office does not intend to continue this case against those journalists.
The CID officers had come to these web sites location buildings and started to search the buildings saying that they have the search warrants and then they arrested those 8 journalists with regard to the accusation of anti-state propaganda affairs. Later those journalists had been accused of attempting to tarnish the reputation of former President Mahinda Rajapaksha and the anti -state propaganda affairs but the CID could not have proper evidences to prove those accusations. Finally the CID put the charges of the possession of pornography in their computers, but The CID was not successful enough to prove those charges as well.
After having released on bail, these journalists filed a case to request for recalling this case again in 2013. When the case was recalled, the Attorney-general office mentioned that their intention was not to continue this case. As a result of this, the Colombo Magistrate released the 8 of those journalists.
