The IUSF convener, Rathkarwwe Jinaratana Thero says that they will fight against, unless immediate release of student activists including union President of Ruhuna University and unless the student repression stops. They will also seek the support of other university students to launch a mass struggle.
A group of 19 students have been jailed for more than 40 days on charges of Freshers ragging, intensifying student repression at the University of Ruhuna.
Student repression has intensified in recent past due to the arbitrariness of the Vice Chancellor of Ruhuna University, Ruhunu Students Union activists say.
Speaking at a media briefing held in Colombo yesterday (18th), IUSF Convener Rathkarwwe Jinaratana said:
“Today we are talking about a special issue. During the past five months, from March to August, a massive Crackdown was launched targeting students of the Ruhuna University. This is still happening. What we are doing today is releasing a report of the crackdown that gathered all those incidents related to the issue. With this repressive report we hope to create a people’s protest against the repression at the Ruhuna University by educating all human rights agencies, embassies, media institutions, trade unions and artists within the days to come.”
