In a letter to the President, Mass Media Minister Ruwan Wijewardene has stated that taking over the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation under the Ministry of Defense is problematic and threatens the media freedom in Sri Lanka.
The letter also states that the President did not even inform the minister in charge about the matter before the Rupavahini Corporation was taken over.
Minister Ruwan Wijewardene has stated through his Twitter account that President Maithripala Sirisena has continuously obstructed the attempts to change the management of Rupavahini proposed as a solution to avoid continuing losses of Rupavahini corporation.
Meanwhile, former producer of the National Rupavahini Corporation, Kelum Palitha Mahiratne has been appointed as the new Chairman. However, It is reported that Inoka Sathyangani has refused the new appointment made by Minister of Mass Media Ruwan Wijewardene and continues to stay in her Chairman post.
