A special meeting between Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Minister Sajith Premadasa is scheduled to be held on today(Sunday the 8th).
Only two members of the party, UNP leader and the deputy leader, meets today as a result of a long discussion among senior party members held at Temple Trees recently.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has reportedly stated at the outset of the meeting of the UNP seniors that he is contesting for the presidential election as the leader of the UNP and the United National Party (UNP).
Deputy Leader of the UNP Sajith Premadasa did not attend the meeting of UNP seniors. The Party’s chairman, Kabir Hashim has left before the meeting ended due to repeated criticism on him by Lakshman Kiriella.
Minister Lakshman Kiriella has accused Minister Kabir Hashim asking to step down from the party if he acts against the decisions taken by the party leadership.
Kiriella has said that he would quit the party leadership if he failed to act in parliament based on the party leadership’s decisions, stating that it was Kabir Hashim who had opposed the offers given to him by the Prime minister.
Minister Lakshman Kiriella also said that Kabir Hashim had also visited Gotabhaya Rajapaksa remaining as the UNP party chairman and that he does not approve of Kabir Hashim’s role as a party leader who cannot even win the district election.
Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has stated, it is important to protect party discipline first of all.
Ministers Gamini Jayawickrama Perera, John Amaratunga, Ravi Karunanayake, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Sarath Fonseka, Malik Samarawickrema, Ranjith Madduma Bandara and Daya Gamage have participated in the discussion.
