Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) media spokesman and MP Weerakumara Dissanayake said that the party general secretary Dayasiri Jayasekera had informed the Election Commission this evening that the SLFP would field a presidential candidate for the next presidential election.
He said that the announcement was made following a decision taken by the Central Committee of the party to appoint a Sri Lanka Freedom Party candidate for the Presidential election.
Even though, Party members had earlier mentioned that Maithripala Sirisena would definitely contest as a candidate if the SLFP contests the election, Weerakumara Dissanayake said that the candidate for the presidential election will be decided at a forthcoming council meeting.
Weerakumara said this was the first official announcement that SLFP would contest the presidential election, however, the SLFP would still hold further discussions with the Sri Lanka Peoples Alliance to form a broad alliance.
