It is reported that the President Maithri has sought the opinion of the Supreme Court regarding the conduct of the Provincial Council election.
The final decision on whether to hold the provincial council election can be determined by gazetting the boundaries of PC electorates by a court order or by a bill passed by parliament. This is due to prevailing issues with electorate boundaries wand holding elections under the divisional system.
Mahinda Amaraweera had also said earlier that the President is due to inquire about the legal status of holding the PC elections. According to political sources, the President has consulted the Supreme Court and it is expected that the decision wii be announced by the first week of next month.
The Election Commission had also stated that if the provincial council election is held before the presidential election it should be held before the end of September.
The President has inquired about the provincial council election as the opposition political party, the People’s Alliance, launched its presidential election campaign.
