Garbage Disposal in Colombo Still an Unanswered Question!

There is a heap of garbage on both sides of the road within the Colombo city limits due to the suspension of dumping garbage in the Kerawalapitiya yard.

The rulers who once dumped garbage in a Municipal Public Stadium in Blumendal, then created a mountain of garbage in meethotamulla. As a result, the lives of hundreds of people have been thrown into the dark, after killing 32 innocent lives. Since then the garbage disposal sited was At kerawalapitiya. The people of Colombo are already suffering from the severe odour from garbage disposal.

Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation says it will take several more days to resolve the situation.

The disposal of garbage collected in to Kerawalapitiya site in Colombo has been in effect since the fall of the Meethotamulla garbage mountain in 2017.

However, The Ministry of Municipal and Western Development has decided to suspend the garbage disposal at the Kerawalapitiya site since Monday due to its garbage capacity has reached its peak at the moment. Municipal council workers who have been disposing of garbage have said that the work has been halted due to the lack of a disposal site.

Although several companies have suggested about recycling options which also generate some profits, politicians have taken no practical steps to solve the problem, as garbage sites generates millions of dollars in their pockets.

A garbage dumping facility is located in the Aruvakkaru area in Puttalam but the Wanathawilluwa Municipal Council is demanding 100,000 rupees a day to dispose the garbage.
