Railway Strike Called Demanding Rights of Temporary and Casual Workers

The Railway Trade Union Alliance has warned the authorities that it is preparing to launch another railway strike to meet the demands of the employees.

They have called for immediate job confirmation of all casual substitute workers in the Railway Department and have requested from Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Arjuna Ranatunga for an expedited discussion to resolve the issue.

According to Co-convener of Trade Union Alliance S. P. Vithanage, about 1,500 casual, substitute, temporary and contract workers in various sections of the Railway Department have been subjected to torment for five years without confirmation. He also alleges that the Railway authorities are taking measures to recruit more workers without making current employees permanent.

The trade union alliance has sent a letter to the minister stating that they will not oppose the recruitment of more employees on the basis of vacancies after the relevant employees are confirmed in their service.
