It is reported that the Mahinda-Namal alliance is working to annihilate attempts of the faction of SLPP(Pohottuwa) who are trying to nominate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa for the upcoming presidential election.
In the meantime Gotabaya Rajapaksha had announced from Singapore that he would be the next presidential candidate representing Pohottuwa and so far Mahinda Rajapaksa was unable to say who their candidate for the upcoming presidential election was. But Namal Rajapaksa says the name of the presidential candidate will be revealed on the 11th August. Mahinda Rajapaksha had inquired from a law firm in America whether it is possible to delay the ongoing process of completing the Gotabhaya’s application to terminate the US citizenship. Further Mahinda Rajapaksha had asked his colleagues in US to get the help from the Tamils groups in the US with this regard.
In the recent past some of the members from the Pohottuwa proposed that Gotabaya Rajapaksha would be the presidential candidate. But now Mahinda Rajapakse and his son Namal Rajapakse who had been very silent about the issue are getting ready to reveal about the candidate on the 11th August.
Political analysts say that Mahinda-Namal fraction had clearly understood that if Gotabhaya Rajapaksa is elected to the presidency, he will work towards to abolish Mahinda Rajapaksa’s political power. The political leaders who work with Pohottuwa are unhappy due to the political power struggle within the Rajapakse family in nominating the presidential candidate. It is obvious that nominating Gotabhaya is getting delayed due to various reasons and hence they may lose their last chance to regain political power over UNP. When Gotabhaya Rajapaksa made the announcement to the media that he was ready for the presidential election and media inquired about this from Mahinda Rajapaksa. But he simply ignored the question and had said he too had seen the comment. The Gotabhaya faction has accused Mahinda Rajapaksa of ignoring Gotabhaya’s ambitions. Wimal Weerawansa and Udaya Gammanpila in particular are ready to express their displeasure to Mahinda Rajapaksa. Both Gotabhaya’s faction, as well as those are against him like Vasudeva Nanayakkara and Dinesh Gunawardena, too have realized that if the nomination is not made soon, the other party will get the benefit.
