A four-member committee has been appointed to review the report submitted by the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Education regarding the private university in Batticaloa and submit a report to the Cabinet. Accordingly, Mangala Samaraweera, Rauf Hakeem, Malik Samarawickrema and Mano Ganeshan have been appointed to the committee appointed by the cabinet.
According to the report of the Sectorial Oversight Committee on Education, MLAM Hizbollah, during his tenure as a Member of Parliament, has entered into an agreement with a government ministry, presiding over an organization called the Hira Foundation. However, a member of the committee Ashu Marasinghe had said that a parliamentarian cannot enter into private agreements with the government.
The Ministry of Higher Education had also released a sum of Rs. 1 million to the University of Batticaloa in the year 2015, the report says.
It also states that the university is not registered under the Registrar of Companies.
Student organizations have protested against the attempt to sell education through this private college since its inception. However, the government ignored it and appointed a committee to investigate this private university, listening to the racist tendencies that emerged following the Easter Sunday attacks. It is also seen that, by appointing another committee, the government does not consider the issue raised by the student organizations that it is wrong to sell education.
