Government’s Muslim ministers including cabinet, deputy and state ministers have decided to resign from their portfolios today(3).
Addressing a media conference held at Temple Trees in Colombo, Minister Hakeem explained the decision as a result of a discussion with the prime minister Ranil Wikcremeasinghe and added that they would support the government remaining as backbench MPs to ensure the government’s survival.
According to the decision, cabinet ministers Kabir Hashim, Rauff Hakeem, M.H.A. Haleem and Rishad Bathiudeen, state ministers Mohomed Casim Mohomed Faizal, Habeeb Mohamed Mohamed Harees, Ameer Ali Seyad Mohammad Sihabdeen and Ali Zahir Moulana Seyed and deputy minister Abdullah Mahrooff are to resign.
Extremist Suicide Attacks done on 21st April were tolerated by the people of Lanka without taking revenge on ethnic basis and the Muslim community gave fullest assistance to arrest extremist suspects who were taking refuge of their own Muslim organizations. However weeks after other political extremists attempted to infuse racist violence and the result was few more deaths. However the civilians did not respond to the extremist appeals. However, a demand by extremist political elements wanted Muslim ministers ousted under the charges of assisting April Bombers. Ven. Athuraliye Rathana demanded removal of three politicians from their portfolios without any investigation. Being a closest of President Maithripala Sirisena thero did not insist government to launch a fair investigation instead echoed popular demands made by Bodubala Sena. The fasting launched by Ven. Rathana was followed by island wide violent wave of protests.
Ultimately, ministers have decided to resign without allowing extremists ignite more and more racist fire. However the ministers and the Ranil Wickremasinghe government have to take responsibility for not responding to extremists who ask isolation of Muslims.
