Commander of the Army, Mahesh Senanayake said that the Army personnel have been instructed to use maximum force to control any attempts to create a situation of unrest. The Army will also have the right to shoot rioters if necessary, according to the powers granted.
The Army Commander emphasized the facts making a special statement made in view of the situation which occurred in the North Western Province yesterday (13).
The complete statement made by the Army Commander is as follows:
“We had to impose curfew in the evening due to incidents spreading in Kuliyapitiya, Hettipola and other areas from the North Western Province. A group of young people have been involved in damaging and destroying properties.
As such, I would like to advise as Army Commander that if action is taken to destroy properties or threaten to ignore the admonitions of the government or security forces, steps will be taken to repress then using maximum forces.”
