The tech giants of Youtube, Facebook and Twitter are “downgrading” humanity by encouraging obsessive and vain behaviour which needs to be radically changed, a leading expert on internet addiction has said.
Tristan Harris, a former google engineer and co-founder of the center for Humane Technology,
warned that technology had started to “overwhelm” human instincts and emotions, reducing attention spans and damaging human relationships, community, and democracy. “This is very very serious. We are not fooling around,” Harris, 34, told an event in San Francisco attended by Silicon Valley leaders. “Technology is holding the pen of history right now.”
He further commented that, tech giants such as Face Book had created an obsession with gaining likes and followers among its billions of users.
The products and services, Harrris has argued have also amplified feeling of outrage, polarisation and vanity, caused smartphone addiction ion and a sense of information overloaded.
“This is overwhelming who we are and our identities.”
