Plantation Industries Minister Navin Dissanayake said at a media briefing in Parliament yesterday that a daily allowance of Rs. 50 will be added to the salary of plantation workers from May.
According to the minister, the daily salaries of estate workers will be Rs. 800 and it is a 40 percent pay increase. The Minister said that the cabinet paper would be submitted next week in this regard.
The Minister of Plantation Industries further said that the agreement of the estate workers’ salary increments was over 20 years and Digambaram and Radhakrishna had not entered as part of the agreement. Therefore, it is now time to recreate this agreement, the minister said.
The 1000th movement demanded wages rise as the companies exploited the plantation labours while they are making huge profits. Therefore, it is obvious that estate workers must have at least a daily wages the same as the other ordinary workers. Accordingly, it is reasonable to request a sum of Rs. 1000, but the plantation industries minister says that in addition to the Rs 750, the Board will provide a 50 rupee allowance. But a plantation worker owns only 800 rupees.
