The proposal to create a “Truth & Reconciliation” Commission has been postponed by the cabinet for the second time on the 26 February.
It is reported that the discussion was delayed because the Ministry of Defense requested further time to submit its observations on the resolution. A Memorandum to appoint a Commission was presented to the Cabinet two weeks ago. At that time, the Minister of Defense, Maithripala and Patali Champika, had requested time for the observations. Meanwhile, Patali Champika Ranawaka has presented his observations to the Cabinet of Ministers.
The Minister’s view is that a general amnesty should be given to the security forces and former LTTE caders instead of appointing a commission. The Minister also says that the government should stop the mediation of involvement of internationals regarding these issues.
