An additional secretary of the ministry of education, issued a written letter to the principal of Southland Girls School of Galle to admit 4 students for the school as nearest school for them is that.
Earlier, the authority of this school has refused to get those students by saying the parents of those students were unable to prove the applicant criteria of dwelling.
The parents continued their protest and ‘Student & Mass Movement for Free Education'(SMMFE) together with other mass organisations jointed with the parents. They all together started a “Sathyagraha” in front of the school and ironically no any authorities have paid their attention for the “Sathyagraha” until it reached 50th day. According to that the SMMFE was going to continue the protest in front of the education ministry from 25th of February. Then the minister gave a meeting for the parents and the representatives of the SMMFE on the same day. In the meeting, the minister had told to the meeting that he was not aware of that problem and tried to put the blame in to the secretaries then agreed to get the four students in to the school. After four hour of the meeting, an additional secretary of the ministry had issued a letter to recruit the students.
According to that, this struggle has won some victories but the SMMFE says that they won’t stop the struggle until these four students start their education at Southland Girls School.
