Ranil-Maithri-Mahinda Agrees to Abolish Executive Presidency?

It has been reported that unofficial talks between the main political parties have been successful in bringing a new constitutional amendment to introduce an executive prime minister and a Ceremonial President.

The first round of the discussions was held on Friday afternoon between President Maithripala Sirisena and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Prior to this, there was an unofficial communication between Mahinda Rajapaksa and the UNP.  Mahinda had discussions with leaders of the plantation sector including Mano Ganesan, Digambaran and Radhakrishnan. President Sirisena and Basil Rajapaksa have also secretly met recently for a detailed discussion about this.

It is learned that a meeting between the UNP and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is scheduled in the coming days.

The JVP and the TNA have already expressed their consent to abolish the post of Executive President.

It is reported that a new Constitutional Amendment will be presented to the Parliament after discussing with major parties.
