According to the President Maithripala Sirisena’s statement, 14 persons who have been sentenced to death for drug trafficking can be hung at any time, the Justice and Prison Reforms Ministry has informed the President. The list of names have been sent to President as his request.
According to the prison records 48 suspects have been sentenced to death for drug trafficking. The Ministry has informed the President that 30 of them have been appealed, so the death penalty can not be executed on them. It is believed that reports of those who were previously sentenced to death for drug charges have been disappeared. However, in this new context the President has happened to sign the 14 death sentence.
However, many Human Rights Organisations , especially the British government, have expressed their displeasure about activating the executions in Sri Lanka.
