The first testing tour of the Matara-Beliatta new railroad started on 6th of January but when it started, Mahinda Rajapaksha’s supporters started a protest.
The people who protested at the station, hung a banner with Mahinda’s photo in front of the train engine. They argued that Mahinda Rajapaksha was the founder of this new railroad therefore he should have been invited for the inaugural ceremony. However this trail journey has been organized by the transport ministry and the chief guest was the transport and civil aviation minister Arjuna Ranathunga.
The financial support for this railroad construction from Chinese Exim bank and this was constructed by a Chinese company of “China Machinery Import Export Coporation”. The sub contractor was the “Chinese Railway Service”.
According to this, the ownership of the Matara -Beliatta railroad is not for Mahinda or Maithree or at least for Sri Lanka but for a Chinese company. If any Lankan Railway train runs in this railroad stretching from Mathara to Hambanthota, Sri Lanka has to pay for the Chinese company. The railway stations and other services are to be run by the same company and the services would be charged separately.
