The Speaker agreed to accept the recognition of President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Leader of the Opposition and to provide relevant official residents, said the General Secretary of the United People’s Freedom Alliance, Mahinda Amaraweera.
A special party meeting was held in parliament on Friday the 4th by Ministers Lakshman Kiriella, Mano Ganeshan, Gayantha Karunathilake and Rauff Hakeem, with parliamentarians Nimal Siripala de Silva, Dinesh Gunawardena, Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Mahinda Amaraweera. It is reported that none of the TNA representatives had participated in the meeting.
The coalition government’s opposition leadership was given to the TNA and the Chief whip of the opposition to the JVP amidst objections. However, TNA MP R. Sampanthan recently stated that he has not resigned as the leader of the Opposition. He further stated that he is still the opposition leader from the constitution.
