The president has shown an extraordinary interest in eliminating the poverty of the people after four years of presidency.
The year 2017 also called the ‘year of poverty eradication’, but neither the president nor the coalition government took any initiative to eliminate poverty. Instead, it was carried out for various state functions while spending millions of rupees for the media- publicity. However, the President has advised the government officials to prepare development plans in the year 2019, at the Polonnaruwa district development meeting named “Pibidemu Polonnaruwa” held at Polonnaruwa District Secretariat office on the 1st of January.
Economists have pointed out that 6.7% of the country’s population still suffers from extreme poverty.
