President Maithripala Sirisenahe has signed the gazette notification ordering the to dissolution of the parliament from midnight today(9).
Accordingly, the gazette signed has been sent to the Department of Government Printing. Meanwhile it is reported that the Cabinet of Ministers sworn in would serve as a caretaker government. The general election is supposedly scheduled in the second week of January.
President Sirisena’s decision to sign this gazette paves the way to dismissing of the 225-member assembly, clearing the way for an unexpected general election nearly two years ahead of schedule.
According to the 19th amendment of the Lankan constitution, the president is not authorised to dissolve parliament until a period of 4 and half years after the government elected.
