The government deploying police, brutally attacked estate workers who protested with their families demanding Rs1000 day wages.
Protest march started around 10.30 in the morning from Lotus road was blocked before reaching presidential secretariat. After a long wait at the blockade police had to allow protesters to reach Galle Face Green. However, when protesters tried to march towards the presidential secretariat from there police blocked them again and used water cannon and later batons charges as well. However, protesters debarred inhuman police assault towards them to protest in front of the presidential secretariat.
Thirteen estate workers started a march to Colombo from Bogawanthalawa on 23rd October demanding an increase of their basic wages. Workers who started the march near Kotiyagala Tea Factory in Bogawathalawa police area demands an increase of the estate workers day wages to Rs. 1200.
Workers not complete 20 days of work in a month only get the minimum wages of Rs 520 per day. Even due to sickness working days, goes below 20 days will entitle to receive only Rs 520 per day. Estate workers lives have dragged to misery by only paying Rs. 700 per day if they work more than 20 days in a month.
