Mannar Mass Grave Bone Samples to be Sent to a Laboratory in USA

Permission has been given by the Mannar Magistrate’s Court to send the skeletal samples recovered from Mannar mass grave for radiocarbon dating analysers in the United States. According to court orders, steps will be taken to send the bone fragments samples to a laboratory in Florida, USA, Mannar Judicial Medical Officer, S. Rajapaksa says.
He said that the skeletal remains recovered from the mass grave have been placed in the Mannar Courts Complex under his custody.
After human remains were found at the former co-operative wholesale depot in Mannar in March this year, detailed excavations have been carried out with special security and the court permission. According to the judicial medical officer, 185 bones were discovered after the excavations took place for 90 days at the site. It has been discovered that there are remains of 12 children within these skeletons.
Permission has been given after the court has been informed that these human skeletons are required to be sent to a laboratory in Florida for radiocarbon dating to decide the timing of these burials.
