A group of inmates of Angunakolapelessa Special Prison have commenced a protest over discrimination and harassments.
Prisoners have climbed to top of a tower in the prsion and commenced protest demanding stop of search operation started by STF and prison officials. About 100 prisoners have joined the protest, sources revealed. It is said that “No STF to Prisons!” as one of their slogans. Recently, authorities decided to ask Special Task Force to take over prison security. STF is accused of targetting and killing inmates during the infamous Welikada Prison Massacre during the Rajapaksha regime.
The authorities describe that the Angunakolapelessa Prison complex is the country’s only modern prison that meets the international standards. However, the Ministry of Prison Reforms recently announced that the Angunakolapelessa prison complex would house most notorious criminals of the country.
After the rescent protest by Welikada female prisoners, 126 of them serving long-term or life sentences at the Welikada Prison had been transferred to the Angunakolapelessa.
