Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Opposition Leader Sampanthan to discuss the appointment of Members of the Constitutional Council, who will provide recommendations for key positions in the state and independent commissions, Sampanthan has said.
Apart from the speaker, prime minister and the opposition leader, the term of office for all members of the council has ended on 07th September. It is only the president’s representative has been re-appointed so far.
Minister of Ports and Shipping Mahinda Samarasinghe was appointed as the President’s representative while representatives for the Prime Minister, Opposition Leader and a representative of the minor party are still to be appointed.
The Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader must name the remaining five members including the three members of civil society, by mutual agreement.
The Prime Minister had discussions with him before he left for London and Norway, and R. Sampandan has said that the discussion will be resumed as soon as he returns to the country.
