A sergeant of the Tebuwana Police has recently challenged the OIC of the police station by protesting using his firearms. The reasons for his protest and anger are being now revealed:
The incident has started after the arrest of an illegally operating sand lorry by Sergeant Sanath Gunawardena and another officer from the Tebuwana police on the 29th of September.
The lorry had been arrested in early hours, at 4.20 in the morning, due to its transport license been expired on September the 28th and the driver of the lorry had no valid driving license. The sergeant had publicly opposed to the incident. In fact, it was reported that the license of the driver had been detained in the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court due to a previous fatal traffic accident. However, the temporary driver’s license was also canceled from September 26.
A vehicle without a driver’s license would be arrested by the police. Accordingly, the sergeant and other police officer has confiscated the expired sand transport license, a photo of the driver’s license, and the lorry, and detained them to put into trial. Such licences like detained driving license and transport permits should normally be released and reissued through a court order. However the documents were with the OIC on the following day and the lorry had been released. The OIC is accused of bypassing the court orders to release the confiscated licenses.
It is also a surprise that the updated sand transport permit and the driving license were handed over to the OIC on the day after the sand lorry was seized. The photocopy of the expired sand license which was seized and in possession of the police to be submitted at the trial has also been obtained from the police station.
A list of documents possessed by the police to be submitted to the court had been released in an unlawful manner to an ordinary businessman who said to be the husband of a political leader of the area.
The police sergeant furiously protesting against the OIC tried to suicide due to a number of such incidents where he could not carry out his duties lawfully without political interference. The Sergeant was disappointed about the OIC duties of mishandling the Justice, his relatives have expressed their concern.
