It has been revealed that the government’s decision to ban importing duty-free vehicles is only relevant to government servants. The government has taken this decision due to devaluation of the Sri Lankan rupee and the current economic crisis.
Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Gayantha Karunathilaka at the media conference on cabinet decision held on the 3rd October said, he surly knows that all the members of the Parliament had obtained duty-free vehicles. Therefore, this prohibition is only for the officers in public service who have the privilege of importing duty free vehicles. At the same media conference, Minister Rajitha Senaratne has said that about 8000 government servants have imported duty free vehicles and that more than seven thousand people still have not used their duty free permits. Accordingly, it is clear they this restriction is applicable only to public servants.
