A meeting of the party leaders in the Joint Opposition was held on the 3rd October at the residence of the former president in Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo. During the discussion at the meeting a decision was taken to appoint a committee consisting the parliamentarians and economy expertise to look into the prevailing economic crisis in the country.
After the meeting, the former president answered to questions raised by the media. While answering he said that he is ready to take over the leadership of the “Podu Jana Peramuna” , find solutions to existing economic crisis in the country and find measures to uplift the value of the rupee. Further he said, that the current government started damaging his image and character from the day one they came into power but now he doubts whether the government has found another approach to damage him other than damaging his image and character.
Mahinda Rajapaksha called for an early presidential election due to the economic crisis faced at that time as a result of amendments brought in for the ongoing new liberal imperialistic system. It was obvious that he went for an early election as his advisers warned him about the economic crisis.
