The movement of employees and the passengers of the Railway Service are demanding the government to reduce the taxes for the diesel fares and to reduce the unjustifiably increased train fares immediately.
Speaking at a media conference held yesterday(3)convenor, Indurathvila Chandrajothi thera stated that even though the government said that the train fares would be increased by 15% currently it has increased by 30% to 35%. Rev. Chandrajothi condemned that the government attempts which bringing down the railway services and put its all burden on the passengers.
The amount allocated for the railway service from the year 2015 has been slashed by 50%. Railway department has lost its Income received from the transport of fuel, goods transportation, railway land and tourist bungalows before and the process of making the railway service for a natural death.
The Thera further urged the government to bring down the train fares immediately and to reduce the fares for private sector employees. Dhammika Munasinghe, a member of the steering committee of the movement also participated in the media briefing.
