In a situation where the JVP has not been supported for the 20th Amendment, the party would have to support an alternative candidate, representing the proletariat, Trade union leader Lal Kanthe said.
Speaking at a ‘Teachers’ Trade Union meeting held in Colombo yesterday (14), he announced that the main political parties would not be supportive for the changes of the executive presidency and therefore in such an environment, the JVP ready to support for an alternative candidate. When he speaks about an alternate candidate, representing the proletariat, it would not be a JVP candidate it seems.
Although JVP speakers have expressed their ideas about a government in 2020, they have never mentioned about a candidate within the party for the presidential election. In particular, during the past, the JVP had an affectionate association with the civil society groups which helped Maithripala Sirisena to come into power in 2015. It can be seen that JVP refocused on a common candidate for the election.
When JVP was in difficulty during the presidential election, they have supported to a common candidate. They did not contest the presidential election in 2015 and supported Maithripala Sirisena’s presidency. However, JVP is preparing for another candidate for the presidential election of 2019, Sources reveal.
