The Ceylon Teachers’ Union alleges that the Western Province Education Secretary has canceled the granting of semi-pay leave for teachers who obtain maternity leave.
Its secretary Joseph Stalin has stated that teachers have been under extreme pressure due to the arbitrary decision taken by the provincial education secretary.
Speaking to our news team, Education Minister of Western Province Ranjith Somawansa stated that if private sector mothers return to their duties by 84 days, the public sector mothers should also be able to come to work in 84 days.
The Minister has said that only a request has been made for them to report back to work in 84 days, and that there is no issue with regard to obtaining the rest of the leave provided they can be requested through a medical report requiring the need of further leave.
The minister has said that if they take one year leave, there is no solution for the lack of a teachers issue in the school.
