The government has launched its latest economic plan named as “Enterprise Sri Lanka” to give away loans at low interest rates. Loan scheme will be implemented across 8000 Grama Sevaka Divisions.
Earlier government launched a programme called “Vision 2025” followed by various other economic plans targeting village level projects. Recently “Gamperaliya” and “Grama Shakthi” projects were introduced aiming infrastructure developments. Similar feature of these projects were that they all target village level vote base.
Even though projects look attractive it is questionable why the government waited untill three years after coming to power to give away concessionary loans aiming economically weak layer of the society. These concessions were not incorporated into any of the previous development plans proposed by the government. It is very clear why government suddenly decided to launch this type of project. Government popularity has fallen to new lows and provision council elections are due soon. Obviously the plan is to bribe the masses to win some popularity among voter base. All this is happening while cost of living continuosly sky rocketing and people force to take industrial action to get a pay rise.
Economic projects initiated by all past government inially started them stating such programmes aiming to uplift the living standards of the common people. It was ‘open economic agenga’ for JR when it was ‘making can do who have nots’ to Premadasa. Chandrika campaigned to give ‘human face fro open economy’ while previous Ranil government talked about a ‘Regaining Sri Lanka’.
Whatever they may call it this is nothing else but the neo liberal economic agenda launched all over the world by capitalist to supress common masses to make profits. Subsequent alliance government of Mahinda and the current current government only just continue the same neo liberal agenda forced to them by their western masters.
