Fishermen in Mullaitivu protested yesterday (2) demanding an immediate stop of fishing activities which using forbidden nets for the fishing. All fishermen from Kokilai to Chalai in Mullaitivu district came to the Mullaitivu town yesterday morning and stated that authorities should take immediate action to stop illegal fishing activities in Mullaitivu. As the authorities failed to hear the demands before the solutions, Fishermen engaged in a protest march and surrounded the Mullaitivu Assistant Fisheries Inspector’s office. The fishermen pointed out that this protest has been carried out over the years as the fishermen who come from other parts of the island has been engaging in large-scale fishing business. Some intruders have damaged the fishing nest of the local fishermen’s to carry out their plunder of fisheries.
Fishermen say that they have been branded as racist by their side to prevent this situation.
They said that the fisheries department should not allow large-scale enterprises as it stops the local fishermen livelihood. They said slogans against corrupt officials who make locals helpless. However, due to the absence of any officials to discuss this issue, protesters entered into the Assistant Fisheries Inspector’s Office and damaged the office property. Mullaitivu police had to intervene to control the situation as a tense situation arose between fishermen and state fisheries watchmen offices.
