Minister of Finance and Mass Media Mangala Samaraweera says that if former President Mahinda Rajapakse refuses the allegations of receiving money from China for the presidential election in 2015, he should sue New York Times.
At the beginning of the ‘Presidential Media Awards’ program, the Minister has stated that the government has no intention of controlling media.
Responding to questions raised by journalist, he said that if any media institution breached the ethics, the people should have the freedom to choose the right thing. When answering a query by the journalist regarding the exposé of the New York Times regarding the former president, Minister Mangala Samaraweera said, “If Mahinda Rajapaksa is right, he doesn’t have to get a character certificate from china.
He further said that, “nothing wrong with the journalists in Sri Lanka, If the New York Times report is wrong, then it is up to the Mahinda to take legal action. “
