Anuruddha Polgampola, an ex-Member of Parliament and former chairman of Timber Corporation was remanded by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) yesterday (16).
He has been arrested and produced in court under charges of financial fraud of Rs. 80 million which has done during the Mahinda Rajapaksa regime.
According to the allegations, he obtained Rs. 35 lakhs from a person who had claimed to run a stone factory. Subsequently, he managed to enter into a 40 million rupees contract with another person showing himself as a sub-contractor of a road development project in the North. He misleads the person showing the machinery used for this purpose. Therefore, he was accused of cheating the two men and frauding Rs. 80 million.
Anuraudgama Polgampola was a former JVP activist, and he has been elected as MP for Kegalle district since 2004, representing United Peoples’ Freedom Alliance. In 2008, he was accused of transporting people to Japan illegally using his parliamentary privileges. Accordingly, he was removed from the JVP, and he joined with Mahinda Rajapakse in 2010. He was appointed as the organiser of the Sri Lanka people’s Front. Then he joined with Maithreepala Sirisena after abandoning Mahinda Rajapaksha. He was smart enough to become the chairman of Timber Corporation on the 4th May.
Recently Polgampola was replaced by the President Maithripala Sirisena with the arrest of the former Chairman of the Timber Corporation, P. Dissanayaka charged with bribery.
However, he was removed from the position on May 10 After the allegations against him were made by various parties. This incident has also come to legendary of Maithree-Ranil imprudent politics in the country.
