At the time when Pandit W.D. Amaradeva was deceased, the government has decided to set up an academy for his services rendered to the Sri Lankan music, which is now being proposed to build as a small Piazza in a tiny land of ‘Ape Gama’ premises in Battaramulla.
The name “Amaradeva Asapuwa” which was initially proposed as a centre for music for all in an environment of tranquillity, is now going to be a Piazza in a busy environment near Battaramulla and the Parliament.
Taking into account the unique contribution made by Pandith W.D. Amaradeva to the Sri Lankan music, as well as heeding the demands made by both Amaradeva and many other artists, the proposed ‘Amaradewa Asapuwa’ would have been built as a study and research centre for music in a comfortable environment.
Unfortunately, some government ministers have intervened in this matter to gain in their narrow political interests. They are proposing to install the ‘Amaradeva Asapuwa’ in 100 perches of land located in ‘Ape Gama’ area in Battaramulla. The proposal by the Minister of Power and Energy Patali Champika Ranawaka to hand over the block of land to the Finance and Media Ministry was approved by the Cabinet yesterday.
