Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe Appear Before Presidential Investigation Commission

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today appeared before a presidential investigation commission probing the issuance of bonds by the central bank. Wickremesinghe spent over one hour before the presidential commission of inquiry investigating bond sales following his written submissions sent earlier.
When the Chairman Justice K. T. Chithrasiri questioned about the two affidavits , the Prime Minister has stated that former Central Bank Governor Arjun Mahendran had been advised to withdraw Arjun Aloysius from the post of Director General and its business activities of Perpetual Treasuries Limited.
The Prime Minister had stated before the commission that he had instructed the Governor of the Central Bank Arjuna Mahendran to consider issuing bonds by way of public auctions in accordance with the economic policy of the government due to transparency issues with the system of private placements.
Prime Minister said he expected Mahendran would comply with due procedure following a legal framework and processes. It was expected that Mahendran would take appropriate steps in accordance with due procedure to give effect to the objectives of the government as expeditiously as possible.
Prime minister further mentioned that Arjun Mahendran had called him after the bond auction on the 27th of February, to explain the auction.
Responding to questions raised by the Attorney General, the prime minister also said that the committee appointed by him and the COPE did not have allegations to sack Arjun Mahendran.
