It has been reported that Lasantha Wickrematunga, the senior journalist and editor of the Sunday Leader newspaper was killed by a group of assassins attached to Tripoli camp in Maradana.
According to the investigations, one of the top officers of the State Intelligence Service was responsible for issuing the order to murder Lasantha Wickramatunga. Further, there is a reasonable doubt that the killing was carried out with the consent of a senior official serving in the Defence Ministry at the time. The investigations are in progress based on the above facts.
It is learned that statements have been collected from a large number of people including Army soldiers regarding the murder. Further to that, Criminal Investigation Department had obtained evidence from Lasantha’s daughter relating to a statement made by Lasantha to his daughter before the murder that he could be killed because of the controversial revelation of fraud and corruption by the big shots of Rajapaksha Regime.
Through the second autopsy, it has been confirmed; the first one was fake. Then JMO of Kalubowila Hospital had carried out the first autopsy, and according to that report, the cause of death was shooting into the head. However, the second autopsy confirmed, Lasantha Wickramatunga had died after being severely attacked his head with a blunt weapon repeatedly.
