Prime minister Ranil Wickramasinghe has informed the election commission to hold elections in January and not to hold any during this year.
PM revealed the news while addressing government officials at Temple Trees. He also stated that the decision was taken to focus on 2018 budget and not to deviate MPs and ministers attention from the budget by declaring an election.
Independent Election Commission was officially constituted by the 17th amendment to the Constitution in 2005. But the Chandrika Bandaranaike government nor Mahinda Rajapaksha regime wanted to activate it. However, after the joint government established the Independent Election Commission, the election process was declared independent. But the comment by the prime minister reveals that in practice, no independence is enshrined with the Independent Election Commission.
