Ranil Promised me the Deputy Position in the UNP – Sarath Fonseka

Sarath Fonseka, Cabinet Minister of Regional Development, says that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had proposed to appoint him as a deputy leader of the UNP in addition to several other positions.

Responding to a question from a journalist following an event in Gampaha, the former leader of Democratic Party Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka stated that he was convinced to join the government with positions in the party and the government. He also said some second level leaders within the United National Party (UNP) had expressed their displeasure about giving the former Army Chief a top position in the party. Fonseka insisted that whether holding a key post or not, everyone knows who he is, and therefore he will not go asking for positions.

The former Army Commander was earlier proposed by the President Maithripala to appoint as a chief in an organization to repress anti-government activities, trade union actions as well as dissident political protests. At the time he was defeated in the 2010 presidential election, Fonseka has told the media that his coming into politics is an acknowledgement of invitations by other people. However, the former army chief accepted the invitation by Ranil, and he was soon appointed as a cabinet minister by the president Maithripala Sirisena.
